Meet the artist

Olena Shabaltas, creator and founder of Shabaltas home decor and accesories.

Shabaltas

Shabaltas is a Kyiv-based brand of ethically made hand-woven decor and accessories founded by Olena Shabaltas in 2013.

Designer and interior decorator by profession, Olena always had a special place in her heart for knitting. Her grandmother taught her several popular knitting techniques when Olena was just a little girl, and through the years, this interest and desire to experiment with decorative pieces  grew stronger.

“I love the simple weaving technique because it lets me experiment with the shape of an object and combine different materials and textures, creating something stylish and distinct,” said Olena.
Shabaltas specialises in unique hand-woven home goods and accessories from cotton, paper, and hemp.

The philosophy of the brand is to create meaningful, simple, yet exciting items that are made to last for years. Shabaltas has been represented in numerous international exhibitions, with the latest presence at Maison& Object in Paris in March 2021.

Signature items of the brand - baskets for storage and decoration, window and wall decor, and creative, playful handbags and totes.

Olena believes in earth-friendly consumption and manufacturing; that’s why she prefers to keep a minimal inventory in her shop in Kyiv and make items to order.

Custom orders significantly minimise waste and offer customers an opportunity to get a truly one-of-a-kind piece.

“Our philosophy is to minimise waste and resources consumed to craft each item, that's why we specialise in small-batch collections and offer made-to-order products,” said Olena.

Hand-knitting baskets

Shabaltas is known for using natural materials -  threads for basket weaving are made locally in Ukraine from cotton, hemp, and paper. Shabaltas items are created by a small team under Olena’s guidance.

Since every item is hand-crafted and no two people have the exact same weaving style, the final look of the article can be slightly different from the one in the photo. That means no two items are exactly the same, and customers are encouraged to reach out to The Modern Heritage support team if they have any questions before their order.

The war transformed Olena personally and opened a new chapter for Shabaltas. As of December 2022, Olena and her two kids have temporarily relocated to France and she continues to create items there, finding inspiration on the beach of a small coastal town. Her husband and the majority of her team are still in Ukraine and working tirelessly on orders in between the air raid sirens and blackouts.

Logistics has become an extra challenge, but Olena and her team are committed to keeping on and growing the brand to support their families and communities.
