During the last 30 years of the country's independence, Ukrainian makers and artisans have been reviving traditional crafts - weaving and rug making, wood carving and wood decor, pottery, and embroidery.
Today, modern artisans aim not only to revive the traditions of their ancestors but also to make their items sustainable and ethical.
Anastasia, the creator and founder of lifestyle brand Gnizdo, aims to create pieces that can be passed down to the next generation:
"We are dedicated to ethical and sustainable craftsmanship, handcrafting each item, and take pride in offering custom-sized and designed pieces. Our focus is on minimizing waste and conserving resources by repurposing leftover fabric cuts into reusable storage bags and small accessories.
Gnizdo offers home textiles, including tablecloths, napkins, towels, and table runners, as well as clothes, all handcrafted in Ukraine from high-quality European flax linen.
Another talented Ukrainian creator, Olena Shabaltas, takes pride in repurposing and reusing materials found in the natural environment, such as leaves, wood, sea shells, and rocks.
Located in Kyiv, her small studio is focused on creating decor and bags from natural and organic materials like cotton, craft paper, jute, and clay.
